Crown Rot & Wilt (not Pictured): Phytphthora crown rot can be caused by P. cactorum or P. citricola in Florida. The disease is characterized by a sudden wilting of plants in the fruit production field. Brown necrotic streaks develop in the crown. The wilt and crown rot symptoms of this disease are difficult to distinguish from the symptoms produced by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, so isolation and characterization of the pathogen is important for proper identification. Leather Rot: Phytophthora cactorum can occasionally infect fruit causing the leather rot symptoms in the photographs. In Florida fruit symptoms are not as common as wilt. |
