| The focus of the strawberry pathology program is to conduct basic and applied research on important diseases affecting strawberry production in Florida and extending the results of the research to commercial growers, extension agents, industry personnel, and other scientists. Diseases are the major limiting factor on marketable yield in strawberry, causing reductions of 5 to 10% of total yield. Current strawberry production integrates chemical and cultural methods to control disease. Changes in government regulations, consumer preferences, and cultural practices make it imperative that new programs be developed to improve disease control and reduce pesticide use in strawberry production. | |
| The pathology program also runs a clinic that diagnoses diseases and provides up-to-date control recommendations for strawberry, vegetable and ornamental samples. The growers, extension agents, and industry personnel that bring in the samples use our accurate disease identification and control recommendations to make environmentally responsible, efficient, and cost effective management decisions. | |
