Responsibilities
To support Florida’s $250 million floricultural and $150 million strawberry industries through:
Research (70% FTE): Performs research in the laboratory, greenhouse and field on management of arthropod pests of the commercial flower and strawberry crops produced in Florida. Emphasis is on integrating biological, chemical, cultural, physical and other methods of managing pest insects and mites.
Extension (30% FTE): Provides strawberry and flower industries with current solutions to insect and mite problems through written and electronic media and personal contacts.
Major Areas of Interest
Biological control of twospotted spider mites in strawberry.
Integration of agricultural chemicals compatible with biological control into strawberry and flower production.
Development of strawberry cultivars tolerant to twospotted spider mite.
Management of lepidopterous larvae, aphids, thrips, sap beetles and drosophila flies in strawberry.
Management of Liriomyza trifolii leafminers, silverleaf whiteflies, thrips, aphids, spider mites and lepidopterous larvae in commercial cut flower, potted flower and bedding plant production.
Communicating effective, practical, and environmentally sound methods of insect and mite management to farmers, citizens and other stakeholders.
Support of development and implementation of integrated pest management in subtropical strawberry and flower crops worldwide.
Recent Recognition
Received the Florida Entomological Society 1998 Team Research Award along with M. van de Vrie (Cortgena, The Netherlands) and Gordon DeCou (Bradenton, Florida) for achievements in the biological control of spider mites on strawberry.
